Dean Poole
Dean Poole is co-founder and creative director of Alt Group, a multidisciplinary design studio based in New Zealand. The studio works in CMYK, RGB and things you bump into. Alt doesn't like using computers that much; they just have to use them because everybody else has one. Alt likes the social life of ideas, collaborating with other people, because the problem with working by yourself is the echo.
Alt Group has been recognized in over 250 international and national awards, including the Red Dot Grand Prix, Art Directors Club Gold Cube, Gold Cannes Design Lion, Graphis Platinum, AGDA Pinnacles, Type Directors Club New York, TokyoTDC, AIGA, One Show Pencils and a Webby Award. The studio’s work has been featured in leading international design publications including the ID Design Annual and Creative Review, and was named the Australasian Design Agency of the Year in CREATIVE’s Hotshop 2010 Awards.
Dean is a member Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), an elite international club of the world’s leading graphic designers and artists. Its members have been collectively responsible for the identity design of most of the world’s top corporations and institutions as well as for countless examples of globally known packaging, publications, illustration and posters.
DO DISTURB
There are many views of creativity. They sit between two extremes. One extreme is emotional: one is rational. On the one hand, from an emotional perspective, creativity is a behavior, an almost close, nearly there strategy of play, in which you cooperate with anxiety looking for evidence that you have arrived somewhere. On the other hand from a rational perspective, creativity is a resource to be managed, like any other organisational resource. So why is the process so messy?
